California Guardsman Earns California Gold Medal of Valor

Sgt. 1st Class Jason R. Schilling goes above and beyond the call of duty and saves lives at the Oakland Military Institute.

On October 04, 2021 Sgt. 1st Class Jason R. Schilling, a California National Guard soldier and a teacher at the Oakland Military Institute, engaged with a disturbed individual who had jumped the the perimeter fence of the school. The individual was carrying a backpack and was armed with a pistol with an extended magazine. At that time, the school had over sixty students and staff members on the campus. Schilling, who was not armed, intervened with the armed intruder and convinced him to unload the weapon and to surrender to the police.
