FRESNO, Calif. - Honing one's skills can and often will occur when the opportunity avails itself. For members of the California National Guard's Biathlon team, it often happens on the drill floor of the nearest available armory.
Clad with long training skates and rifle strategically harnessed, the biathletes figure eight around the drill floor as curious soldiers watch.
Quickly launching themselves into a prone shooting position, the athletes gain control of their breath, focus in on their target, and take the practice shot.
For many, this is a new experience which has developed a strong bond amongst the team.
"My favorite part of being on the team is the traveling," said Spc. Maria Harral. "I'm able to go to places I've never been and meet people from other National Guard bases. We network, make new friends, and learn about resources for biathletes."

A common thread that runs through the tapestry of the biathletes conversation focuses on the feeling of being a tightly woven extended family.
"Its a sisterhood and brotherhood with the team," stated Army Staff Sgt. Manyback Phavorachith. "Its a different bond. We are just one person-one team. It's a nice community to be a part of."
The Cal Guard Biathlon team is open to all interested service members and they are a family willing to help new recruits.
