SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California National Guard recently increased the amount of deployed service members at the California - Mexico border by 50% as part of the Governor’s statewide initiative to disrupt drug trafficking at four Southern California ports of entry on Sept. 7, 2023.
The additional service members will support the existing partnership between the San Diego Imperial Valley High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection - Office of Field Operations by providing ground reconnaissance support and observational analysis on organized crime.
“Fentanyl is a deadly poison ripping families and communities apart,” stated Gov. Gavin Newsom in an official statement released about the activations. “California is cracking down, and today we’re going further by deploying more service members to combat this crisis and keep our communities safe."
The California National Guard's drug interdiction efforts directly supported a multitude of local and federal law enforcement agencies in the past year, which resulted in the seizure of approximately 2.37 million pounds of illicit narcotics – an estimated $5.3 billion.
