SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The California Cadet Corps Marksmanship Training Unit, one of 20 Advanced Camp units, is designed to build confident leaders while instilling discipline and maturity.
The program focuses on smallbore rifle qualification. Cadets progress through basic, intermediate, and advanced marksmanship courses each summer that they participate in. Safety, however, remains the primary focus, encompassing weapons handling, range protocol, and the precise execution of instructions delivered by certified instructors and personnel from the San Luis Obispo Sportsmen’s Association.
“Definitely discipline,” said Cadet Master Sgt. Keegan Senft when asked what he considered the most important thing he gained from his participation. Senft, 15, of the 4th Brigade, Oakland Military Institute, said the discipline he learned on the range carries over into everyday life. He referenced future job interviews as one example where his sharpened ability to remain calm and communicate effectively would be an asset. “I can calm down, think about where I’m at, and then properly and clearly communicate or do something that I need to do,” he said.

Cadet 2nd Lt. Kahmira Love, 18, of the 18th Brigade, Silverado High School, reflected on how her leadership responsibilities affected her conduct. “It taught me more about leadership and that I should hold myself to a certain standard as an example to the other cadets,” she said.
Cadets in the Marksmanship Unit are housed at the range, located three miles from the main camp, for the duration of the six-day course. “I love being here. I love shooting firearms. I love the atmosphere at the range,” Love said.
When asked about his favorite part of the training, Senft said, “Hanging out with my friends after a good day of shooting, just taking in the aura of the surroundings and the vibe of the group.”
