Sacramento, Calif. – California National Guard service members highlighted their motivations for staying drug-free in a 3-part video series produced for Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31.
The videos demonstrate how finding a natural high, such as hobbies and family support, can be essential to building a healthy, resilient, and drug-free lifestyle.
Cal Guard's drug demand reduction outreach teams throughout the state visited with youth in local communities to celebrate Red Ribbon Week as a way to commemorate the loss of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique Camarena and recommit to living every day free of substance use.
"Each year, we strive to make sure everyone is drug, alcohol and violence-free," said U.S. Army Sgt. Victor Del Real, a Cal Guard drug demand reduction outreach specialist in Northern California. "When I teach a curriculum, I believe it's important for our youth to know that help is out there when you need it and there is nothing wrong with asking for it."
Many members of the Cal Guard have made it a top priority to travel to schools statewide as a way to encourage young people to make positive life decisions, which in turn may help lead to a life full of opportunities and growth.
"The best part of the job is seeing students inspired to create this positive environment for their peers and actually wanting to help each other out," said Del Real.
